Register for news updates3 New Rail Trails Proposed in WA’s Great Southern Region
Western Australia’s Department of Transport have released the Great Southern 2050 Cycling Strategy which outlines an ambitious plan to develop a connected rail trail network, turning the region into a premier cycle touring destination.
It proposes completing the Denmark-Nornalup Heritage Rail Trail and developing adjacent ‘transport trails’ linking it to key destinations such as the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk and Peaceful Bay.
Additionally, three new rail trails are proposed for the agricultural region north of Albany:
- Albany to Woodanilling Rail Trail (~200 km) – A route adjacent to the active rail corridor linking Albany, Mount Barker, Cranbrook, Tambellup, Broomehill, Katanning and Woodanilling
- Kojonup to Pingrup Rail Trail (~150 km) – A closed rail corridor linking Kojonup, Katanning, Nyabing and Pingrup
- Tambellup to Gnowangerup Rail Trail (~95 km) – A closed rail corridor connecting Gnowangerup to Tambellup.
These trails will enable multi-day touring through diverse landscapes, from coastal forests to the Stirling Range National Park, while linking key towns and attractions. With the region’s mild climate and growing cycling tourism sector, these investments will boost local economies, create jobs, and establish the Great Southern as a must-visit cycling destination.
