The Shire of Yarra Ranges has secured promised funding of $4.1m to extend the Yarra Valley Trail (YVT). This government investment will be used to create a shared path from Yarra Glen to Tarrawarra in the Yarra Valley, on the outskirts of Melbourne. This will be Stage 2A of the YVT.
While Stage 1A of the YVT was completed in 2020, linking Lilydale with Yering (via Coldstream), Stage 1B from Yering to Yarra Glen has been delayed by the waterlogged Yarra River flats. This development has been further divided with Stage 1B (i) to be completed in mid-2024. Until the land dries and hardens, Stage 1B (ii) cannot proceed. Once complete, the currently funded sections will link Lilydale with Yering and the Northern Yarra Glen Loop trail.
“The growth of the trail network around Yarra Glen has been planned for many years and is finally real, becoming a valuable asset for the local community and visitors to the region. The completion of the YVT will be amazing for everyone,” says Rail Trails Australia vice president Steven Kaye.
