Construction of the next section of the Yarra Valley Trail (YVT), from Melba Bend to the Yarra River near Yarra Glen, is expected to start within months following Yarra Ranges Council’s approval of a tender for the project.
The extension is expected to open early next year. The first 7.5 km of the YVT, from Lilydale to Yering, outside Melbourne, was relatively simple, while the 3.9 km from Yering to Yarra Glen had costly delays in the planning-approval process, an appeal hearing and prolonged wet weather.
The project was split into more sections, with 1B.1, from Yering to Melba Bend (1.1 km), approaching completion and 1B.2, from Melba Bend to the Yarra River (1.5 km), now approved by council, but the delays mean there’s insufficient funds for the 1.2 km across the river to Yarra Glen, which features significant proposed boardwalks and an 800 m bridge.
Ryrie Ward Councillor Fiona McAllister said she remains optimistic that council will be successful in getting the funding for the substantial bridge. Stage 1B.3 is one of the council’s main funding advocacy missions in the lead up to federal and state elections and for future grants rounds.
