The Kotta and Lockington Communities in Victoria recently welcomed back the Kotta Station to its original home after forty years of displacement. In recent years the station has been situated at the Port of Echuca and was used as the ticket box for paddlesteamer rides. Campaspe Council were more than happy to remove it from the Port of Echuca to make way for a more accessible viewing platform to the Murray River.
The Lockington Kotta Rail Trail Committee have been blown away by this development and are very appreciative of this special return of the small, yet iconic building. In preparation of the move the committee spent hours preparing the old platform in readiness and in doing so found the original Kotta sign which will proudly be placed back onto the building.
The move took place on Tuesday, 7 June and all went very smoothly. The station was transported safely by truck from Echuca to Kotta, approximately 32km, and then lifted by crane and gently placed onto the platform. Most of the Lockington Kotta Rail Trail Committee were present to witness the event and were thrilled that everything went to plan.
It was an exciting day and another step closer to bringing the Lockington Rail Trail a reality. It also recently benefited from Rural Aid Australia volunteers constructing over 1km of fencing along the corridor. The Committee will continue to advocate for the ongoing development and are very grateful for the property owners along the 8km trail who are fully supportive of its development.
