The District Council of Mt Remarkable has completed the final stage of the Southern Flinders Rail Trail, the 28km Booleroo Centre to Stone Hut section. The Federal, State and the District Council of Mount Remarkable Governments jointly funded the $1.1m project. The trail complements the Council’s investment in the construction of several mountain bike trails in the hills adjacent to the rail trail.
The Mount Remarkable Mayor, Stephen McCarthy said “we have transformed the district into an international destination for mountain biking, hiking, and touring. We are thankful for all those who have contributed over this long journey”.
The trail follows the alignment of the Gladstone to Wilmington railway which ceased operation in 1988. The trail has a total length of 80km (Wilmington to Laura) and moves through open plains and then into tree lined valleys adjacent to the Rocky River.
