A 2km extension of the Barossa Rail Trail from Kalbeeba to Gawler East is nearly complete. After significant weather delays, including some minor rebuilding after rain damaged some of the prepared surface, the trail extension was sealed on Saturday 18 June. Some finishing work remains to be completed but the trail should be finished by 30 June.
The extension is a welcome addition to the Barossa Rail Trail. Currently starting at Kalbeeba, access from Gawler is via Calton Road, previously a quiet country road. New housing estates, a shopping centre, new link road and roundabouts have served to increase traffic markedly and reduce the road’s suitability as a cycle route.
The new extension links to existing cyclepaths and cycle routes in Gawler East, making access much safer and more convenient for all users.
