The Barossa Council has commenced work on a 1.8km extension of the Barossa Rail Trail at its western end. The extension follows the southern side of the rail line from the current end of trail at Kalbeeba through to Sunnydale Avenue at Gawler East. There it will link with an existing off-road cycle path to facilitate access to central Gawler via a network of paths and back streets.
The trail route has been cleared and some base layers laid down. It is expected that the trail extension will be completed in the first half of 2022.
Not only will the trail extension provide safe access to Gawler and trains to/from Adelaide but will also link to the existing Stuart O’Grady cycle path which follows the Northern Expressway through to the inner northern suburbs of Adelaide.
Electrification of the Adelaide to Gawler railway is nearing completion and trains are expected to be running again in April 2022
