Register for news updatesFraser Coast Regional Council to Request Rail Trail Funds Swap
The Bundaberg to Gin Gin Rail Trail project was abandoned by Bundaberg Regional Council in October 2024 when they decided not to fund the balance required to proceed with the project, estimated to be $20.687 million. The council instead provided in-principle support for community groups to take the lead.
Regarding Fraser Coast Regional Council’s request for the previously allocated funds, Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said: “We are keen to ensure the State Government funding earmarked for that project remains available for other rail trail developments.”
As well as asking for the $9 million, Frazer Coast Regional Council will also submit a proposal to contribute $250,000 of the returned funds to a $500,000 project to bring online another undeveloped section of the Mary to Bay Rail Trail.

This attitude by Fraser Coast Council is a slap in the face to those hard working individuals in the Bundaberg Region who are organising a Volunteer Committee to take over the development of the Gin Gin to Bundaberg Rail Trail. A public meeting last week had huge community support and the Rail Trail is still going to happen with support of Bundaberg Regional Council. Hands off our money Fraser Coast.
