Many users of the Barossa Rail Trail will be familiar with the ‘leaning tower of Nuri’. A ‘wigwag signal’ at the railway crossing on Barossa Valley Way in Nuriootpa was hit by a vehicle a number of years ago and the pole developed a significant lean. Conveniently positioned as a stabilising handhold for cyclists waiting to cross the road, the pole would sway alarmingly when pushed.
Aurizon, who hold the lease on the line, removed the signal pole this week. As the after photo shows, it was only necessary to remove one nut as the other three mounting points had broken off the base plate.
