The e-bike is a great way to get more people and families using the rail trails in Australia!
Bicycle Network believes electric bicycles (e-bikes) provide the opportunity to dramatically shift transport habits in Victoria (and probably in other states too) and as such, governments could be doing more to encourage their uptake.
That is why Bicycle Network has written to the Australian and Victorian climate change ministers to support the introduction of e-bike subsidies.
Recently, Tasmania wrapped up its $200,000 e-bike rebate scheme which offered up to 12% of the purchase price, capped at $500 for standard bikes and $1000 for cargo bikes. More than 350 people received e-bike rebates within the four-month timeframe established by the program.
And in South Australia two councils have also announced e-bike rebate schemes along the same lines.
According to Bicycle Network’s CEO Alison McCormack, these sorts of schemes rolled out across Victoria could have a big impact on the uptake of e-bikes and be a faster way to cut our emissions than just relying on the switch to electric cars.
And the more people riding means more incentive to provide safer cycling infrastructure. RTA has to note that e-bikes make rail trails enjoyable for more people, which appears to be increasing the use of rail trails.
