Four yet-to-be-developed rail trails in regional NSW have recently renewed their efforts to progress financing, planning and construction.
The trails are :
- Monaro Rail Trail – Queanbeyan/Michelago to Cooma and Bombala – supported by Snowy Monaro Regional Council who are collating public responses to the recent trail feasibility study
- Batlow to Tumut Rail Trail – seeking funding from bushfire recovery programs to support trail planning and development
- Molonglo Rail Trail – Bungendore to Captains Flat – a renewed push with Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council to support funding for the trail development plan, building on the existing trail feasibility study.
- Gundagai Rail Trail – working with the Eastern Riverina Rail Trail Alliance to ensure the Cootamundra to Gundagai rail trail (including the historic rail bridge across the Murrumbidgee River at Gundagai) is included in regional rail trail planning and funding.
In addition, the Armidale Regional Council recently allocated $25,000 for planning of the New England Rail Trail, showing strong local support.
Rail Trails Australia expects that the opening of the Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail on 3 April 2020, the first in NSW on a government-owned rail corridor, will provide direct economic evidence of rail trail benefits, and will provide a boost to the NSW rail trail scene.
