With the recent rail trail activity in the southern states, we are pleased to report that our two local councils, Tableland Regional Council (TRC) and Mareeba Shire Council (MSC), are actively getting on board.
TRC have recently reinstated a Rail Trail Advisory Committee comprising 2 councilors and an active cohort of 12 cyclists/users.
The primary purpose of the committee will:
– inform a strategic and long term approach to Rail Trail management and development in the region
– facilitate and improve comms. between various groups
– facilitate and inform external grant funding opportunities
A trail audit has recently been undertaken and we look forward to working with TRC in upgrading trail facilities.
Other good news is the recent resheeting by TRC of a 1.75km ‘showpiece’ section of the Atherton Tablelands Rail Trail in far north Queensland from Atherton towards Tolga.
This section of the trail has been transformed over the past year by our T4 volunteer group, aptly named Tableland Tracks, Trails and Trees. The group have effectively completed the Queens Jubilee program with 2,250 Mabi trees planted and having invested approx. 1,100 volunteers hours of planting, watering and mulching on the trail corridor. This sector of the trail has been revitalised by attractive tree copses, which in a few years, will provide beneficial shade and an improved wildlife corridor for all users.
With Mareeba Shire Council actively engaging with the cycle/user fraternity and recently refurbishing a 7.5km sector in late 2022, the last 7km sector of the Atherton Tablelands Rail Trail is not far from refurbishment and completion.
Given the above good news we look forward to our region having a safe 35km trail trail between Mareeba and Atherton in the near term.
Finally the Atherton Herberton Historic Rail/shared trail, which heads south toward Herberton, is also gaining momentum and the 3.3km already completed is increasingly used by cyclists and walkers.
