Westside Rail Trail Overpass to provide safety for cyclists
The 10.5 km Torrens to Darlington upgrade of Main South Road in Adelaide will involve two tunnel sections and some complex new surface roads that have the potential to create barriers for pedestrians and cyclists. The project design has incorporated 4 bridges/overpasses in these sections to ensure that cyclists and pedestrians are able to cross South Road conveniently and safely.
The Westside Rail Trail crosses one of these sections; however the design has recognised the importance of the trail as a commuter and recreational route by proposing a significant overpass. This will provide improved safety for cyclists and will overcome the current delays and frustration when trying to cross South Road.
Local cycling and walking networks will be upgraded to connect with new and existing South Road crossing points at Westside Rail Trail, Mike Turtur Rail Trail and Marino Rocks Rail Trail. This will ensure increased patronage of these rail trails.
