A small group of residents in the Greenethorpe district are calling on surrounding communities to show their support for a proposed cycling trail that they hope will bring more tourists to the small town. The small town of Greenethorpe, with a population of about 320 people, hopes to boost tourism by trying some new ideas.
Dubbed the Greene-bike Initiative, the proposed trail would utilise abandoned railway lines and convert them to pathways for bike riders to tour through the scenic countryside
The creator of the initiative and the owner of the heritage listed Iandra Castle, Rod Kershaw, said the little townships of Grenfell and Greenethorpe have been pushing this initiative to boost regional tourism.
“People need to have a reason to stay in the town,” Mr Kershaw said.
The Hodges family have been planting sunflowers at the front of their farm for the past three years. Kate Hodges said her father Warwick came up with the idea as a way to bring joy to families after the devastating impacts of the drought.
“We just kind of planted them in the plot, with the hope that they would grow,” Kate said.
Locals from right across the region made the trip, just to snap Instagram-able shots of the sunny crop.
“Before we knew it, social media picked up the sunflowers, everyone was positing pictures and tagging Greenethorpe,” Kate said.
The sunflower field has become an annual family affair for the Hodges household.
Every year, Kate’s brother Joseph sows the seed, while Kate prepares the iconic “pick me” hay bale.
“The little green bike on top of the hay bale is a tribute to not only the Tour De France, where all the cyclists ride through sunflower fields, but also a proposed rail trail from Greenethorpe to Grenfell,” Mrs Hodges said.
