NSW Minister for Infrastructure, Cities and Active Transport Rob Stokes has announced funding of $770,000 for the development of the Pippita Rail Trail in western Sydney.
The money will be used to plan the conversion of the disused Pippita rail freight corridor between Lidcombe station and Sydney Olympic Park into a 2km shared cycling and walking path. The corridor includes 2 bridges, one over Parramatta Road and a larger one over the M4 motorway. The corridor runs parallel to the existing suburban rail line to Olympic Park, and once served abbatoirs and factories before Olympic Park was built. It has a short section of bushland at the northern end. When built, the rail trail will provide a safe active-transport route into Olympic Park, expanding the cycling and walking options that already exist in that precinct. There are currently no off-road options between Lidcombe and Olympic Park.
When built, the trail is likely to have a similar look and feel to the very popular Goods Line located in Central Sydney, which is also relatively short.
The $770,000 funding was announced as part of a $40 million package of active transport initiatives in NSW. It comes as progress is being made to remove the legislative roadblocks to rail trail development in NSW, with the passage of rail trail enabling legislation through the NSW Legislative Council on 9 August 2022.
