The Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail would provide a link between Taragoola, near Gladstone, south through to Gayndah in the heart of Queensland’s citrus country. At 270km, it would easily eclipse the 161km Brisbane Valley Rail Trail as Australia’s longest.
Since 2012, community groups have lobbied government to make use of the corridor and an incorporated BBIRT organisation was formed last year. A 119-page feasibility report has since recommended three shorter trails be further investigated, these being:
· The 36km Awoonga Lake Rail Trail.
· The 32km Kalpowar Tunnels Rail Trail up the spectacular Dawes Range
· The 29km Burnett River Bridges Rail Trail from near Gayndah to Mundubbera
Rail Trails Australia supports the findings of this feasibility report and encouraged both councils to support it. Gladstone Regional Council has decided that it will proceed to the next phase – a trail development plan for the first two trails, which are in its region. This includes making an application to the State Government for 100% funding for this phase, which will provide a detailed design and costing for the trail. North Burnett Regional Council resolved to continue to provide in-principle support by acting as a conduit between BBIRT Inc, other community groups and the state. Both councils have passed resolutions requesting further clarity from the State on funding arrangements.
