It’s been a long time coming but with a generous $13 million grant from the federal government to help speed it along, the 134 km Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail is finally complete.
On June 1 2012, the Hon Simon Crean MP officially opened the Rail Trail at Molesworth.
Phil Twycross Chair Committee of Management and Lynn Plummer Project admin (out of picture) hold the ribbon as federal Minister Crean cuts the ribbon with local federal member Rob Mitchell and local state member Donna Petrovich.
Since the line from Tallarook to Mansfield and Alexandra closed in 1978, it lay dormant. In 1996 work began on reclaiming the rail corridor for the community as a shared-use trail. Over the past 16 years the Shires of Mansfield, Murrindindi and Mitchell and local support groups banded together to formulate a plan to bring the Trail to life. In 2009 they succeeded in securing $13 Million in federal funds to assist in developing the Rail Trail and only three years later have achieved the dream.
Now that the longest continuous rail trail in Australia is open why not gor for a walk or a ride on the new Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail!
For more information and map of the trail see our Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail description.
