In a joint bid with Central Goldfields Shire Council and Mt Alexander Shire Councils, Castlemaine Maryborough Rail Trail (CMRT) in Victoria were successful in receiving a $120,000 Victorian Tourism Grant. The grant will assist in completing a feasibility study and pre-design for the trail. The good news was announced on Friday, 10 June by Bendigo West MLA Maree Edwards and Tourism, Sport and Major Events Minister, Martin Pakula.
The CRMT will now be busy over the coming weeks to prepare information to further develop a detailed business case and feasibility study and the design of the 55km trail’s first stage.
At the announcement, followers, friends and supporters of CRMT including Rail Trails Australia were thanked and acknowledged by the CRMT President Dr. Janice Simpson. She also thanked Maree Edwards, Martin Pakula, local schools and businesses and Ripon MLA Louise Staley. She noted that there was excellent community support with many individuals and business who had provided financial contributions to underwrite the bid together with the two Councils.
The hardworking CRMT committee and core team of volunteers put in an incredible effort to pull together the information required for the bid which included a promotional video, illustrated tourism map and supplementary information. More information about the funding announcement and work completed prior to this milestone can be found at https://cmrailtrail.org.au/your-trail-gets-a-big-start/
The next steps will be appointing consultants and to secure significant capital funding to move to construction within the next year. Formal approval is still required from VicTrack and other consultation work relating to the environment and cultural heritage will also need to be completed.
