The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Queensland, trail managers for the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT), has announced the refurbishment of two disused creek crossing bridges at Black Snake Gully near Esk, and Cooragook Creek near Coominya. These two creek crossings currently require trail users to descend into the gullies below the bridges to traverse the watercourses that the bridges span. Both crossings frequently have shallow water flowing and can be impassable after heavy rain events. These gullies between Esk and Coominya  have frequently been the places where trail users have experienced accidents, sometimes requiring emergency services to attend, attempting to negotiate the steep and narrow tracks which can be slippery. The steep trails into and out of the gullies have also caused cyclists to snap chains as riders get caught out in the wrong gear and attempt rapid gear changing under load.
Following the 2022 floods in Southeast Queensland, TMR witnessed firsthand how much the BVRT means to the economic environment in the regions it passes through. TMR is placing a stronger focus on trail maintenance with upgrades that improves the user experience and will seek to minimise the impacts on the trail during and after extreme weather events. These upgrades will make the BVRT more flood resilient and allow the trail to remain open during the rain periods.
The refurbishment of the two bridges will repurpose and preserve these two structures providing safe passage for trail users and preventing the structures just standing idle and decaying away. Site preparation has commenced at Cooragook Creek with works expected to be completed by May 2024. The trail will remain open with detours in place. Works at Black Snake Gully are expected to commence in the new financial year.

One comment on “News from the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail”
That is great news!
We regularly ride the BVRT and three creek crossings between Coominya and Esk deter us from riding that section, so we prefer riding to Wulkuraka.
When these two projects are completed we will be able to ride to Esk and enjoy the BV Roasters before heading further afield!
Great work!
