Monaro Rail Trail takes a big step forward
The Snowy Monaro Regional Council has announced it is working jointly with the Monaro Rail Trail group and Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council on next steps towards developing a rail trail between Bombala, Cooma and Queanbeyan in southern NSW.
The three organisations have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to proceed with detailed plans for the rail trail, which will include the towns of Nimmitabel, Bredbo, Michelago and others along the corridor.
In making the announcement, the Mayor of Snowy Monaro Regional Council Narelle Davis said the trail would provide the opportunity for communities to develop new businesses and improve the economic prospects for the whole region. “Local communities will benefit from thousands of cyclists, walkers and charity riders spending about $25M per annum in our region, creating employment, linking to other tourist attractions and providing opportunities for healthier lifestyles”, Ms Davis added.
President of Rail Trails Australia Damian McCrohan welcomed the announcement and congratulated the three organisations on their work. “This is a great start for the Monaro Rail Trail, and marks a new chapter in rail trail development in NSW”, he said.
