In a continuing example of the success of the Tweed section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, Tweed Shire Council has awarded licences to operate three commercial shop front spaces at the historical Murwillumbah Railway Station, at the head of the rail trail.
Shire councillors unanimously supported a recommendation to award the licenses following a robust and competitive expression of interest and open tender process. Three licences were awarded to two bike hire and tour operators and a cafe outlet.
The current lessee Murwillumbah Cycles has moved its operations to its other shop at Mooball and will continue to offer sales, repairs and bike hire from this shop. As with most bicycle hire businesses, customers are encouraged to book online as customers will still be able to pick up bicycles at both ends of the rail trail through the offering of a complete delivery and pickup service.
Rail Trails Australia wishes the new and existing businesses all the best for the future as they encourage further use of rail trails.

Great facility, rode it in March this year, after riding other back roads and trails from Tweed Heads to arrive into Murwillumbah from the north.
But then there was this missing link – no signage, information or facilities to get the 1km or so from Murwillumbah town centre, across the bridge, and safely across a double lane roundabout to get to the trail head at the former station. Maybe those that were involved in the planning just assumed that everyone would be driving with the bikes to the trail-head and parking their cars? Hopefully there is something in place by now to provide a better link from the town centre to the trail-head (as say has been done for the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail).
Cafe at the railhead would be perfect for riders starting at the other end of the rail trail.
I was surprised recently when I discovered no food or drinks upon arrival from Mooball.
