Batlow rail trail a step closer
The Batlow Tumut Rail Trail Association has announced that funding has been secured for a feasibility study update, a key step in getting stage 1 of this long-awaited rail trail to the start line. Sufficient funding is also available for the trail development plan for the initial trail section from Batlow to Wybalena.
Snowy Valleys Council recently voted to approach the NSW Government to lease the rail corridor and to fund the construction of stage 1.
The rail line from Gilmore to Batlow was opened officially in 1923 as an extension of the Cootamundra to Tumut line, but was closed to all rail traffic in 1983. The route north from Wybalena includes scenic sections on the descent to Tumut, where the original station building can still be seen.
