Great news to finish 2022, the extension of the Great Southern Rail Trail in Gippsland, Victoria is finally complete.
The Bass River and Allsop Creek bridges have been decked so the scenic 36km Nyora to Leongatha section is now fully open, perfect for the holiday season. If you are really keen the total length from Nyora to Welshpool of 103km awaits.
See our website description for details of shorter section options with the many wonderful towns along the rail trail.
Congratulations to the South Gippsland Shire Council for creating arguably one of Australia’s best rail trails with the support of the Victorian government. And there is more to come with construction of the remaining 21km Welshpool to Alberton section scheduled to commence next year.

Link through Leongatha is complete, but you need to be careful crossing the road after the station (heading towards Korumburra). Best to turn left and go up the hill about 20-30m and cross there where you have a better view of traffic. The trail is in excellent condition. Took 1.5 hours up hill at a leisurely pace for Leongatha to Korumburra. The op shop in Korumburra is great to visit and view the enormous collection of elephants
I'm from QLD, and rode the full length of the GSRT earlier this month, an absolutely beautiful railtrail. Thank you to every one involved with its development.
Can't wait until I can ride it.
