Travellers on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail have welcomed the recent opening of a new bridge over Logan Creek, located about 10km north of Coominya on the trail towards Esk. Since the BVRT in this section opened over a decade ago, trail users have had to negotiate one of the most difficult gully crossings on the entire 161km trail at Logan Creek. It was necessary to follow a narrow detour track that zig-zagged below the old trestle bridge and a water crossing which would become impassable after significant rain. The trail managers, Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), had positioned large sandstone blocks in the creek bed as ‘stepping stones’ to enable trail users to cross the creek when flows were low but the decrepit state of the old railway bridge prevented it being restored and re-purposed for trail use.
Last financial year, a replacement bridge was budgeted for by TMR and construction began in the second half of 2023. All the old timber, much of it rotten, was removed, leaving just the large concrete anchor footings. Using designs true to the original trestle, a completely new timber bridge has been reconstructed with a wide deck and safety rails. The contractors also reprofiled the track leading down into the gully making it wider for horse riders who are directed off the bridge. The sandstone blocks were removed and riders now walk their horses through a, usually, shallow water crossing. The new bridge is a marvellous addition to the trail and most trail users stop at this point to admire the construction of the bridge and the view from its deck. In more good news, TMR plans to rebuild another bridge in the 2024-25 financial year.
