Register for news updatesOakbank to Mt Pleasant (SA)
Mt Pleasant is 49km north east of Adelaide. Around 1918 a Railway line was opened between Balhanna, 10km east of Mt Lofty, and Mt Pleasant. Along its route it passed through Oakbank. The line was closed in 1964. The way between Balhanna and Oakbank has mostly returned to private landowners. The route between Oakbank and Mt.Pleasant is owned by the S.A. Government.
There have been discussions between interested parties to restore this disused easement between Oakbank and Mt Pleasant to a standard that can be used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. A consultant team has been appointed to examine current use issues, and to identify a range of future opportunities.
Benefits of creating a Rail Trail are seen as:
- Providing links to the Mawson Trail,
- Providing recreational and biological links as part of the Yurebilla Parklands Concept,
- Providing a safe off road walking/cycling option for commuters to Oakbank High School,
- Providing an option to cycle off road attracting Tourists to the area and nearby towns.
The Adelaide Hills Council has appointed a project Manager, to oversee the operation through its formative stages and hopefully to fruition.
