Significant Grant received by East Gippsland Rail Trail
The East Gippsland Rail Trail (EGRT) recently received an $82,500 grant from the East Gippsland Community Foundation’s Bushfire Recovery Community fund to control vegetation on the side of the trail. When you have nearly 100km of rail trail, that’s a lot of vegetation to control!
Earlier in May the trail had a substantial surface upgrade close to Mossiface at the Bairnsdale end of the track. For those who haven’t seen how a solid surface is laid, there is some quite heavy machinery involved.
In April there were fallen trees and flooding on some sections of the track. Volunteers were quick to clear storm damage close to the Orbost end.
How many times have you ridden along a rail trail and come across a shelter with a sign saying “untreated water, do not drink”? This will not be a problem on the East Gippsland Rail Trail. Two new hydration stations have been installed for thirsty walkers, riders, and other trail users.

More great improvements with this trail since I did it. I would love to see a new bike path constructed from Orbost to Marlo (and the beach) that narrow road is suicide for cyclists. I wrote to their local council and mayor suggesting the tourist boost it would provide along the Snowy River.
