Wagga Wagga City Council voted unanimously on 26 July to give in-principle support for the development of rail trails in the Wagga Wagga area. This positive outcome paves the way for further planning work to take place, including the section of disused line between Wagga Wagga and Ladysmith. The next stage will be community consultation and a detailed report to Council in April 2022.
Rail Trails Australia acknowledges the work of the local advocacy group Wagga Rail Trail over many years in support of the development of the Wagga Wagga to Ladysmith Rail Trail. Wagga Wagga is NSW’s largest inland city, and the construction of the Ladysmith trail would create many new tourism and community benefits across the region.
When built, the Wagga Wagga to Ladysmith rail trail would also link with the Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail which has been very successful since opening in April 2020, to make an attractive multi-day tourism experience across the Riverina highlands of NSW. Rail Trails Australia supports the further construction of all rail trail sections on the disused rail line from Ladysmith to Tarcutta and Rosewood.
