The Port Dock Line extension in Adelaide will result in a change to the Outer Harbor Rail Trail route and a substantial improvement in cyclist and pedestrian safety. Port Adelaide Enfield has taken the opportunity to prepare a proposal to redevelop an existing car park into a cyclist and pedestrian plaza to form part of the trail. The proposal is undergoing community consultation.
Funding has already been approved for the construction of an 80m “jetty-style” bridge linking the McLaren Pde Plaza to the northern side of Dock 1. The bridge is being jointly funded by Renewal SA and Kite Projects, the developer of housing on the northern side of Dock 1. The project is expected to be completed by late 2024.
It is also proposed that an 8m-wide waterfront promenade for pedestrians and cyclists will continue from the bridge to the Maritime Heritage precinct at Dock 2. This proposed shared-use path to Dock 2 constitutes a rail trail as the new bridge and promenade are located where a small locomotive used Robinson Bridge (1883 to 1935) and the waterfront area to transport goods between the docks and the Outer Harbor Railway.
