The Australian and South Australian governments have jointly (50:50) funded $400m for the removal of level crossings where the Glenelg tram and the Mike Turtur Rail Trail cross Marion and Cross Roads. A tram and bike overpass will be constructed between the two roads (approximately 700m) to ease traffic congestion. It will also significantly improve safety and convenience for cyclists and pedestrians, not to mention providing a great view to the coast and to the Adelaide CBD.
The tram line will be closed for between 6 and 9 months during the construction works however cyclists should be able to detour around the site.
The opportunity will be taken during the tram line shut down to rebuild the tram overpass at South Road, which includes the Mike Turtur Rail Trail, as part of the future South Road tunnel project from the River Torrens to Darlington.
Once community consultation based on the concept plans is completed, work can commence on the detailed design work.
The State Government has also commenced planning work on the potential removal of the Morphett Road level crossing where the tram and bike trail cross Morphett Road.
