The Queensland Government has just released its third action plan under the 10-year Queensland Cycling Strategy for 2023-2025. The plan sets out a sustainable agenda of 49 practical actions the Queensland Government will deliver over the next two years. It builds on the progress made though the first action plans and affirms the government’s commitment to improving conditions for bike riders and encouraging more Queenslanders to ride bicycles for transport, health and recreation.
The cycling plan specifically includes objectives to leverage the growing domestic and international interest in bike tourism with a commitment to support local governments and private industry to develop more rail trails. The plan positions this firmly within the category of “Powering the Economy” with the commitment to support local governments to plan, design and construct rail trails on disused rail corridors. The articulated objective is to increase regional trail riding experiences and the associated economic opportunities. The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail gets specific mention with a commitment of continuing implementation of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Strategic Plan with the intent to develop the BVRT as a world class tourism asset. In addition, the plan includes an additional strategy to invest in strategic advertising to attract intrastate, interstate and international visitors to the BVRT and help drive local economic growth in adjoining towns and experiences in the Brisbane Valley region. Evidence of implementation of this strategy can be seen in the Qld Government sponsoring an episode in the new season of the SBS series ‘Trail Towns’ which recently screened with the first episode devoted to the BVRT. Kudos to the Queensland Government for their commitment to support of rail trails with strategic plans that are benchmarked and reviewed every two years.
