The Riesling Trail Committee celebrated its 25th anniversary on the 7 November 2023. The trail was one of the earliest rail trails to be constructed in South Australia and one of the only ones to be governed by a management committee of volunteers.
Thanks to the untiring work of the committee, the Riesling Rail Trail has become a world recognised icon for the Clare Valley, providing a boost to tourism and recreation, highlighting wine production and accommodation and a strong uniting force in the community.
The committee continues to be proactive by working with local contractors to renew sections of the trail, replacing aging bridges and removal of pest plants.
At the committee’s 2023 Annual General Meeting, Peter Wood stood down as treasurer, a position he has held for the past 10 years. Peter has been a past chairman of the committee and has been a committee member for close to 20 years. Chairman, Allan Mayfield, thanked Peter for his service to the committee and the Clare Valley community.
There is something special about this group of volunteers. Their commitment to the trail and the local community is only surpassed by their commitment to supporting each other.
