The Barossa Rail Trail extension between Gawler East and Kalbeeba is now open and proving very popular with cyclists and walkers. The hotmix seal provides a smooth path of good width which has been constructed alongside the railway line. Whilst the line hasn’t been used by a train since 2013, it is still regarded as ‘operational’ and can’t be removed.
The new 2 kilometre extension removes the need for cyclists to travel via the increasingly busy Calton Road in order to access the Barossa Rail Trail from Gawler. The new path links to the Gawler Cycleway at Sunnydale Avenue in Gawler East, facilitating safe access to the centre of Gawler via a network of paths and quiet residential streets.
The project was jointly funded by The Barossa Council ($464,000) and the State Government ($336,000 from PIRSA Regional Growth Fund).
